EU: A necessity for the People of Europe

Sir, The key to the European Union's future is not that its citizens love it but that they come to appreciate its usefulness. As your editorial "L'Europe tragique et magnifique - at 50" (March 19) states, Europe has achieved more in its 50 years than any other comparable organisation, but its publics remain sceptical about the merits of membership.

The agreement on climate change this month is a perfect example of what the EU can do. It can add value on policy areas that go beyond national borders. It can seek to strengthen the single market and facilitate further free movement of goods and people. It can maintain the pressure on better regulation. It can continue to combat economic nationalism.

The EU's climate change deal is an appropriate final chapter in the European story of 50 years. As it embarks on the next stage of its development, it needs to concentrate on delivering on environmental and economic outcomes.
