Labour Party Conference: BNE and CER roundtable: “Europe’s Crisis: What role for Britain?”

Business for New Europe and the Centre for European Reform, sponsored by Clifford Chance

Panel discussion, followed by drinks reception.

Europe has suffered the worst financial and economic crisis at least since the oil shocks of the 1970s.  Some say that this is the worst crisis ever – in terms of the figures involved, debt to GDP and deficits, and the fact that Europe is more politically and economically interconnected now than ever.  The Eurozone has put in place a €440 billion special purpose vehicle which will be used in the event of debt defaults in Eurozone states.  The UK has remained separate from that.  The UK faces a challenge - should it play a role in the crisis, and if so, what?  Other non-Eurozone members are helping, and the UK has been criticised for not joining them.  Some suggest this is damaging our influence in the EU, and that we should join the SPV.  We will be having this discussion at each of the three conferences and pooling the outcomes into a report to be published on their conclusion.
